March Madness and Money: Lessons from the Court

March Madness is right around the corner, and as a sports fan and financial therapist-in-training, I can’t help but draw parallels between basketball and money management. Watching underdog teams defy the odds is a reminder that strategy, preparation, and resilience matter just as much in personal finance as they do on the court.

Can you believe we are already in March? This year has been interesting in the sport’s industry with one of favorite moments being the Philadelphia Eagle’s winning the Superbowl and the very controversial yet revolutionary half time show with Kendrick Lamar. However, I believe this year’s college basketball tournament will be full of surprises. I don’t have a favorite team but I tend to root for the underdog, with the hopes of teams with lower ranks cause an uproar against the giants. Why? It shows a level of resilience and determination, ultimately proving that grit and teamwork can make anything possible. In a way, managing finances is no different. You don’t need to start with the most resources to achieve success; you just need a solid game plan.

For me, March Madness is also a time to reflect on the importance of teamwork. Whether it’s collaborating with colleagues or seeking guidance from mentors, the right support system can make all the difference. As I further my education and business, I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help, whether it’s advice on balancing my workload or insights into managing financial stress. It is not always easiest thing to do but even the smallest amount of help can take you a long way.

This season, I’m rooting for the underdogs both on the court and in life. Let’s embrace the madness and remember that persistence and strategy can take us further than we ever imagined.
